School Issued Devices - TikTok Trend
We want to let you know about a dangerous TikTok trend that is affecting school-issued student devices. Some students are being encouraged online to stick metal objects—like paper clips or broken charger parts—into the USB ports on their Chromebooks. This can cause the devices to overheat, smoke, or even catch fire. Not only does this destroy the Chromebook, but it can also be very dangerous for students and those nearby.
This behavior clearly breaks our student device agreement and school rules:
- Damaging School Property on Purpose – Students agree to take care of their devices. Breaking them on purpose goes against that agreement.
- Using Technology in Unsafe Ways – Doing things with the device that could hurt someone is not allowed.
- Creating a Safety Risk – Making a Chromebook smoke or catch fire is a serious danger and could lead to big consequences, including suspension, paying for repairs, or even legal trouble under Ohio law (ORC 2909.06).
What You Can Share with Students:
- Talk About It – Let students know this trend isn’t a harmless joke. It’s dangerous, destructive, and can hurt people.
- Explain the Consequences – Students need to understand this could lead to:
- Losing their school device
- School discipline (like suspension)
- Paying for repairs or replacements
- Possible legal trouble
- Encourage Safe Tech Use – Remind students to use their devices the right way and to think before joining online challenges that could hurt themselves or others.
- Watch for Signs – Ask staff to keep an eye out for signs of this behavior, like broken USB ports or students talking about trying it. Report any concerns right away to the tech team or district office.
We also suggest sharing this with parents so they can talk with their children at home.
