Dear Little Miami Families,
We want to let you know about a new Ohio law, HB 114, that changes the age requirement for kindergarten starting next school year.
In the past, schools could use dates like August 1 or September 30 to decide if a child was old enough for kindergarten. The new law removes those options.
Under HB 114:
• A child must be five years old by the first instructional day of school to start kindergarten.
• A child who has not finished first grade must be six years old by the first day of school to enter first grade.
• Schools are no longer allowed to choose an August 1 cutoff date.
What this means for your family:
If your child turns five on or before the first day of school, they can start kindergarten that year. If your child turns five after the first day of school, they must wait until the following school year to enroll in kindergarten.
If you have questions or need help figuring out your child’s eligibility, please contact the Little Miami Registration Office.
Thank you for your support of our students and schools.
