State assessments at LM begin Apr. 11

Posted on: March 31, 2016

The Little Miami Local School District will begin administering state assessments on Monday, Apr. 11.

Federal and state laws require all districts to assess all students in specific grades and courses. Little Miami students in grades 3-10 will take both English language arts and math assessments. Students in grades 4 and 6 will take social studies assessments and students in grades 5 and 8 will take science assessments. Students in high school enrolled in Algebra 1, geometry, American history, government, and biology courses will take end-of-course exams in these classes. For an overview of testing subjects and dates, view the Little Miami testing schedule. Specific information about a student’s testing times will come from that student’s teacher and/or principal.

All state assessments for the 2015-2016 school year have been created by the American Institute of Research (AIR). Ohio has used AIR assessments in the past, including the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) and the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). The state of Ohio has discontinued the use of PARCC assessments.

Educators at Little Miami use these and other assessments throughout the school year to gauge student achievement and to identify where students may need help. Statewide testing also allows school districts to assess where they are in relation to similar districts.

These assessments are important and are required by law. Administrators at Little Miami understand that there are some families who are hesitant to have their students participate in state assessments. However, there is no provision in Ohio law to allow a parent or student to “opt out” of testing.

For more information on student testing participation, please see Student Participation information from the Ohio Dept. of Education.
