Look out New York City: Four young ladies from Little Miami Intermediate School are about to make a big splash on Wall Street.

Sixth graders Justine Cline, Carly Boldman, Lauren Holt and Mara Briscoe will be traveling to New York on an all-expenses paid trip after winning the Stock Market Game Portfolio Challenge on the campus of the University of Cincinnati this week.

The team, named the Four Stocketeers, had already finished in first place among all elementary schools in the state of Ohio prior to competing in the Challenge, hosted by the UC Economics Center on Apr. 26. The Stocketeers, along with the top state teams in the middle school and high school categories, had to prepare a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation for a panel of judges explaining all that they had learned and gained from their experience this year. The top two teams with the most impressive presentations would then have the opportunity to travel to New York City to give their presentation to executives at Goldman Sachs, Lazard and Legg Mason on May 12-14.

In the Stock Market Game, teams are given an imaginary account of $100,000 to invest in a stock portfolio of their choosing with the goal of growing their money over 10 weeks. Team members have specific roles and must do research, keep records of stock sales and purchases and study market reports to make the best investments.

The Four Stocketeers, advised by LMIS teacher Judy Todia, had a practice run of their presentation in front of the Little Miami Board of Education on Monday, Apr. 25, and explained how Green Mountain Coffee stock helped them increase their profits.

The next day, the team won the Portfolio Challenge.

The contest is sponsored by Ohio National Financial Services, which is picking up the tab for the students and Todia to travel to NYC.
