Dawn Gasper: Little Miami Intermediate School Counselor

Posted on: February 1, 2016

Feb. 1-5, 2016 is National School Counselors Week and to mark the occasion, here is a quick Q & A with the Little Miami Intermediate School counselor Dawn Gasper.

Q. How long have you been a counselor at Little Miami?
A. Fifteen years.

Q. What is your professional history?
A. I have been in education for 28 years and have worked in 5 different school districts. I spent four years in the classroom teaching Home Economics, grades 7-12. The next 24 years I have been a school counselor serving students in grades K-12. I was also a track coach for 10 years.

Q. What is the most challenging thing about being a school counselor?
A. Juggling 700 students and making sure that I am able to meet the needs of my students, parents, and staff. The needs/concerns of students today seem to be more challenging than 20 years ago.

Q. What is the most rewarding thing about being a school counselor?
A. I love my job, it is never dull. You can make a “To Do” list but when you enter the building each day you have no idea what you are going to face. My hope is that I am able to make a difference for my students so they are able to become successful young men and women. I have been blessed to work with some amazing people who continue to help me grow as an individual and a school counselor.
