Mock crash coming to LMHS April 20

Posted on: April 13, 2017

Just in time for Prom season, Little Miami High School students will receive a vivid reminder about being safe behind the wheel.

On Thursday, April 20, at 12:45 pm, Little Miami High School will stage a mock car crash at the school to reinforce the importance of making good decisions, whether students are behind the wheel or riding as passengers. Those decisions include wearing seat belts, obeying speed limits, refraining from texting while driving, and abstaining from drinking and driving. Juniors and seniors will be viewing the mock crash.

The exercise will be led by Premier Health Atrium Medical Center and will have the support of CareFlight, Phipps Towing, Hamilton Twp. and Salem Twp. Fire Departments, Hamilton Twp. Police Dept. and Vale Hoskins Funeral Home. All time and resources have been donated by these organizations to support our students.

The mock crash will involve police and fire agencies and a CareFlight helicopter, weather permitting. We wanted to let our community know ahead of time to alleviate any concerns about seeing these agencies on site at LMHS that day.

The mock crashes are presented in a way to offer as much realism as possible. Students are presented the experience of exactly what they could be responsible for, including killing someone, possibly one of their friends, as well as being arrested for crimes as serious as homicide by vehicle and the possibility of going to state prison for up to five years.

In Little Miami’s particular scenario, the crash will involve two vehicles that combined are occupied by high school students, one of whom will die as a result of their injuries. Student actors from Little Miami High School will portray the victims of the crash. After the demonstration, actual parents who have lost a child to a similar tragedy will speak to our students.

Little Miami’s Prom is on April 22 at Paul Brown Stadium.
