Tilford named OASBO Food Service Director of the Year

Posted on: October 22, 2016

Little Miami Food Service Director Rachel Tilford has been named the 2016 Outstanding Food Service Director of the Year by the Ohio Association of School Business Officials.

Tilford, who is beginning her fourth year at Little Miami, was nominated for the award by Superintendent Greg Power. Not only has Tilford created a highly-professional food service department that provides nutritious meals for the district's students, he said, but she also brings much more to the table.

Tilford has supported the development of school gardens in the district, with the result being that student-grown vegetables are being served within the district's cafeterias. Also, prior to Tilford's arrival at Little Miami, the district would use outside vendors for catering staff breakfasts and lunches. Now, that no longer needs to happen.

"Rachel has worked with her staff to improve and enhance the quality of food offerings to the point that our staff now prefers to utilize her staff and our food service to support meeting these needs," Power's nomination said. "Last school year, Rachel worked to have her department host our staff holiday breakfast and our end-of-the-year staff recognition dinner. Both of these events were very well received and helped to raise staff morale."

Tilford has also appeared before the Ohio Dept. of Health and Dept. of Agriculture to enact a positive change in onerous food labeling regulations that would have cost public school cafeterias millions to implement.

"As a result of her efforts, we estimate that Rachel saved our district at least $40,000 in implementation and deployments costs and created a common sense solution that benefits our students as well," Power said.

As a recipient of the award, Tilford will receive a plaque, a $500 scholarship to present to a graduating senior from Little Miami and her name will be added to a plaque in the OASBO offices in Columbus. Tilford will be recognized on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Ohio School Boards Association conference in Columbus.

"I am extremely grateful to the amazing leadership of Little Miami Schools that has allowed me to follow my passion in this second career," Tilford said. "I am excited to contribute to a team that is dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible for the children of our community. Every day I wake eager to continue to find new ways to contribute to the success of our students, staff and school district and serve this community with my whole heart."
