Lot's of things to learn...

Here are some of the things we are learning!

Reading: We are reading a book called Bunnicula together and practicing the new reading strategy of questioning. Book clubs are now in full swing, be sure to check out what your child is reading! We are learning how to use examples to support our answers when we are taking tests and responding to literature in writing.

Writing: We are finishing up our fantasy stories, the children have great imaginations! Through this story we learned what each stage of the writing process is and got to practice each one.

Math: In unit 2 we are discussing how to add and subtract mentally by breaking apart the numbers: trying to get away from relying on our fingers : ) We are also learning different ways to organize information in a word problem so that we can solve them successfully.

Science: Our guests have done some wonderful things while they were with us, and the time has come to let them go....
We continue to study animals, learning about adaptations, characteristics, and comparing prehistoric animals to present day ones.

Social Studies: We started to study maps. We learned the different parts to one, how to make one, and how to read them. We also are using a compass rose. The next step is for us to learn the continents, oceans, hemispheres, etc. We will also be studying communities.

WELCOME TO THE THIRD GRADE!!!

Sorry for the delay in updating the class website. We had some technical issues to work through : )

Hopefully your child is enjoying the first week in third grade! We spent some time getting to know each other and are beginning to get into the swing of things now. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions!

Next week we will be starting some work in our reading series and I will continue to do some informal assessments to put together Book Clubs. We are already learning how to write in our writer's notebooks and how to form a great paragraph in writing. Spelling lists will start next Wednesday.

In science we will be learning about life cycles, adaptations, comparisons form old and new animals and changes in habitats. Be sure to ask your child about some of the guests we will soon be having in our classroom!

We started our math program yesterday and will be doing lesson 1.3 tomorrow. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction math facts at home. I would like the students to begin using strategies to add and subtract mentally.

Please sign assignment books each night, even if no homework was assigned.

Thank you for all you do!!!
