Welcome Back!

Welcome to second grade! Our first week of school is going great. We have a terrific group of students in our classroom. We have spent a lot of time this week learning about classroom routines and expectations. We have also met many new friends. It's going to be a great year!

Sept. 4-7

We will not read a new story this week because we will spend some time writing stories and reading "Book Club" books. We won't have any new vocabulary words for our bonus points on the spelling test. For homework on Tuesday, please read the Student Writing Model on p. 38-39 with your child. On Wed., we will begin writing our own stories.

August 27-31- Our First Full Week

We will establish many of our routines this week.  The first is our assignment book.  Each day, the students will write their homework in a planner.  Please check it and initial or sign it at the bottom, and make sure it gets put in the bookbag every day.  We will not have homework on most Fridays.  You will also notice a sticker chart in the front of the assignment book.  Your child will receive a sticker each day if they have not lost any recess due to misbehavior or unfinished homework.

We will start to use our reading series this week.  Typically there is one story per week.  I would like the students to bring their books home at least twice a week.  Listen to your child read aloud to you.  Ask questions and make predictions as you go.  Take turns reading aloud if the story is long.  Don't forget to put the book in the bookbag every morning.

With our reading series we have spelling lists.  The lists correspond with the story of the week.  We will have a test on Friday.  Usually the words are quite easy for most second graders.  To challenge those who need it, I will write the vocabulary words on the board for the students to copy on the back of their spelling list.  I will choose one of those words for extra credit.  Since the students won't know which word will be picked ahead of time, many enjoy the suspense and make sure that they practice all of the words.  For those who do are not ready for the extra challenge in spelling, please just practice reading those words.

I am going to start something new this year which has to do with memorizing facts in reading, math, science and social studies.  At the end of the spelling test, I will ask the students to answer a question or questions.  These answers will become extra credit grades in science and social studies.  This week's questions: How many days are in a week? (7)  How many months are in a year? (12)
