Reading Contracts

EXTRA CREDIT
Reading fluently is an essential part to reading and understanding what you are reading. Reading fluently is reading accurately, quickly, and with expression. It is directly related to your child's reading comprehension, independent reading and work completion. In an effort to help improve and increase students' ability to read fluently, I am offering extra credit readings.

The students are given a story to read. Each night the student should read the story working on reading fluently. As your child reads, you will record any words that your child did not know or missed. After that reading, review those words with your child. Also, record the time it took for your child to read the passage. Continue this all week. On Thursday, your child should answer the questions on the back of the passage. Turn it in on Monday. Your child will get extra credit points for completing the readings and correctly answering the questions. Sorry, if it is not turned in by Monday it will not be counted. Also, it is important that every part is completed completely.

Reading Contracts are a great way to learn many things about your child as a reader. Students should be reading 20 minutes nightly for five nights. Your child should be choosing books at a just right level. Your child should also be able to read for a sustained amount of time. Watch to see if your child is choosing books that interest him or her. That will help your child in developing more of an interest in reading.
