We are starting our unit on Rocks and Soil. If you have soil samples that your child could bring in to help us compare different types of soil it would be greatly appreciated.

We are currently reading Because of Winn-Dixie. This is a favorite among the students. It is a story about a girl who is new in town. She befriends a dog, Winn-Dixie. And it is through this friendship that leads her to make more friends. The students and I have discussed that the movie is based off the book. We also discussed how the two can be different through our perceptions. We view the characters and events through our own imagination from what the author has described. When we see the movie version that is someone else's perception of the characters and events.

As we move into the third trimester, I will be making some changes in expectations for the reading contracts. I have discussed these changes with the students. The first change is that I would like the students to choose a chapter book to read at their level. I will expect to see summaries for each night on that chapter book until the book is completed. This will help me see if your child is able to pick a book at his/her level and be able to stick with reading one book consistently. Many children have trouble sticking with a book and abandon it before they have given it a chance.
For the students who have an alternative reading contract I would like for the parents to record how long it took for your child to read the passage. I would also like for you to record the words missed. If your child misses a word then tell it to them and move on. Record that word on the paper. I will expect that the passage is read nightly. This is to help build fluency.
Thank you for your help and cooperation.
