The following is taken from "School History" by W.P. Harford, written in 1899:
"The first public school building in Morrow was erected in 1847, on the present site of the M.E. Church and Union Hall. The lot was donated to the church and school district by W.C. Clement. The second story of this building was used for church purposes. The first story was occupied exclusively for the school, and until 1852 it contained only one room. During this year, it was divided into two apartments, one of which was assigned to Miss N.B. Hart, the lady already mentioned in connection with the private schools of Morrow.
In 1860 the new school building was erected. It contained only four rooms, but owing to the growth of the town and the consequent increasing demands of the school, two more rooms were added during the year 1868."
Marlene: Since there is still a church on that piece of property and it was a Methodist Church (until they built on Welch Road), I feel fairly sure the school built in 1860 was built where the school is now. (This also was property owned by Mr. W.H. Clement.) In Mr. W.W. Cade's thesis, the Board of Education makes the resolution to build a new school but says nothing about any new property. This was 1912. Your office is part of that school.
Marlene: Donnie Henderson told me about the date stone and showed it to me one day when I was at the school. I believe that was two years ago, but I was in the middle of taking down the Senior Pictures and having them taken apart, cleaned and put on CD's. (I now want that put on DVD's; hope I live long enough.) Anyway, I thought about having that stone restored and then doing something with it until I talked to Dodd's Monuments Inc. and found out what the cost might be. Since my brother-in-law was in the cement business, I felt he would understand what I wanted. He came one day and we measured the stone, and then I drew a rough draft of what I thought and he said, "OK". His name is Donald Markesbery and he is married to my sister, Elaine. (She graduated from LMHS in 1963.) Their company is Don Markesbery Contractors, Inc. of Florence, Kentucky.
Marlene: When we figure out what we want on the plaque and how that should look, etc, Don will take care of installing. The donations for that plaque came from Mr. Robert Bennett, Morrow High School, Class of 1949 and Mr. Robert Barnett, Class of 1958. I would like them both mentioned in whatever news is put out.

Marlene: The lady that did the newspaper article on my book did not want to do this story, but told me to get in touch with the Western Star. Maybe after all is done, we should do that. Also, I would like to take a very back seat on this. My name need not be mentioned at all, but Donnie, Bob and Bob should receive credit.
