The Little Miami Board of Education believes that homework, as long as it is properly designed, carefully planned and geared to the development of the individual student, meets a real need and has a definite place in the educational program.
Homework should be assigned to help the student become more self-reliant, learn to work independently, improve the skills that have been taught and complete certain projects such as the reading of worthwhile books and the preparation of research papers. Home study assignments also afford a way for parents to acquaint themselves with the school program and their own children's educational progress.
In an effort to set guidelines for homework and to create a clearer understanding of the purposes of homework, the Little Miami Board of Education adopts the following:
1. Purposes of Homework are:
A. To reinforce skills through drill. B. To reinforce material covered in class by review. C. To bring students into contact with out-of-school resources. D. To broaden and enrich the knowledge of a student. E. To encourage students in the process of self-education and self-directing. F. To allow for differences in the ability, achievement and interest of the students. G. To provide a means by which parents can see what is taking place in the school. 2. Characteristics of Desirable Homework Assignments:
A. Students should clearly understand the purpose of the assignment as well as what the assignment actually is. B. Homework should be meaningful and not "busy" work. C. Some assignments should be given to be completed over a period of time. D. Assignments should be evaluated by the teacher and returned to the student. E. Assignments should take into account individual differences of students in a particular classroom. 3. Types of Homework Activities:
A. Continuation of work begun in class. B. Drill in fundamental skills C. Review of materials. D. Research for long-term projects. E. Gathering of materials and a systematic presentation. F. Purposeful seeking for ideas and information through observation of the world around us. G. Experimentation to uncover fundamental truths. H. Textbooks, library materials, reference works and recreational reading. I. Make-up essential and appropriate work missed due to absences. 4. Length of Homework Assignments: Because students differ in the ease and speed with which they learn, it is not possible to apply strict guidelines as to length of assignments. The following is a general idea of what is expected in the Little Miami School District.
A. Since intelligence and comprehension varies from student to student, so should homework. B. The combined amount of homework should seldom exceed two hours each evening for any student to complete. C. Additional homework should not be given on weekends and holidays. D. Assignments should be completed and turned in on time. 5. Role of the Home:
A. Cooperate with the school in making homework effective. B. Understand what the school expects homework to accomplish. C. Encourage the students to do the best of which they are capable. D. Encourage the students to work independently. E. Show an interest in what the students are doing.
Homework Assignment Books
Each student will receive a Homework Assignment Book. These books have been purchased for our students and will be used daily to record short and long term assignments in all classes. This Homework Assignment Book can be a valuable communication tool from teachers to parents. Please ask your child to bring this book home regularly throughout the school year, so you can monitor their progress on assignments. If a student loses their Homework Assignment Book, they may purchase a new one in the office for $5.00. Students are expected to bring their assignment book to every class, everyday. The assignment book will be used by teachers when a student needs a hall pass to visit their locker, the restroom, the office, guidance counselor, library, etc. Teachers will note the needed information on the correct date in the book whenever a student has permission to travel in the building hallways.
Strike System
Due to the high level of expectations here at the Junior High we have also instituted a building wide homework policy. Students are expected to maintain a consistent effort at home as well as here at school. Choosing not to complete homework or classroom assignments is a behavior problem and therefore needs to be addresses as a discipline issue.

Missing assignment/ class work = 1 strike
5 Strikes in one month = FridaySchool on the 1st Friday of every month

Missing Assignment #2- Strike 1- Team Discipline
Missing Assignment #3- Strike 2 = Call Home and notify parents
Missing Assignment #4- Foul Ball = Team Meeting
Missing Assignment #5- Strike Out = Call home and schedule FridaySchool and refer to office for due process
