Hope For Christina

Christina Hendricks, a seventh grade student on Team Young Einsteins, will be receiving a kidney transplant and her mother is the donor. The Young Einstein students and teachers hope to raise money for this family for medical expenses by selling Panther Hope T-shirts. The t-shirts are black with Panthers written in green on a white design and cost $10. On the left sleeve is the word Hope with Christina's initials underneath. Order forms were sent home with all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. You may order as many t-shirts as you would like. Please make checks payable to the LMJH PTO and return the order form and money to your child's homeroom teacher by Thursday, March 11th. Haiti Relief Efforts

Thank You to everyone that donated. Little Miami Junior High was able to raise $7386 and organize 305 health kits to send to Haiti for releif efforts. This truely shows what a community can do when they work together. Thank you students, staff and parents!

Safe School Zone

As winter approaches, the district would like to review driving procedures at Little Miami High School and Little Miami Junior High School to ensure the safety of our students. Please review this information so that we can all work together to make dropping off and picking up students on this campus as safe as possible.

1. Drivers should remember to slow down in the school zone to 20 miles per hour and use extra caution during drop off and pick up times.

2. Parents/Guardians should only drop off and pick up students in the designated zones.

3. Please do not allow students to exit vehicles on Morrow Cozaddale Road. It inhibits traffic flow and is dangerous for students.

4. Do not wait to move to the front of the line. As soon as you are safely stopped in the drop-off zone, have your child exit your car.

5. Avoid blocking the bus entrance or otherwise impeding the flow of traffic.

6. Park in designated visitor parking areas if you need to enter the building with your students.

7. Students should walk up to the main entrance of the school on the sidewalk.

We appreciate your cooperation as we strive to keep these school sites as safe as possible for our students, staff and community.

Lego Champs

Team Logic, a community team from the Little Miami School District, recently competed in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Smart Move Challenge Regional tournament in Dayton. The team includes Little Miami students Nick, Hunter, Catherine, Johnathon, Grayson Wells and teammate Madelyn. They are coached by Steven Donahue and Linda Evers Smith.

The 2009 FLL Smart Move Challenge has two components: a research project and a robot game. To compete in the tournament the team of third and sixth grade students had to complete a research project and build and program a Lego Mindstorms robot to accomplish specific missions related to the 2009 FLL Challenge.

For the Smart Move Research Project, the team had to identify and describe their community, choose a transportation problem within that community, research the problem, identify a solution, and then share the research and solution with others outside their team. Team Logic's project examined traffic at the Little Miami Junior High and High School campus. The team researched and identified how RFID smart traffic light technology could help alleviate traffic issues. For the Smart Move Robot Game, the team had to design, build and program an autonomous LEGO robot to complete missions for points on a competition table.

Fifteen Ohio teams competed in the Regional Tournament. Each team was judged on technical design and programming, research project presentation, robot performance on the competition table, teamwork and demonstrations of FLL Core Values.

Team Logic won both The Robot Design Award and the Robot Performance Award. For the Robot Design Award judges evaluated the team's problem solving strategies and their robot's mechanical design, degree of innovation and programming effectiveness. The Robot Performance Award recognized the team whose robot was able to score the most points in competition.

Additionally, Team Logic received one of three invitations to compete in a two-day Ohio State Championship Tournament at the Nutter Center in Dayton in February with 48 teams from all over Ohio.

The team is in its first year and was sponsored by P&G managers Tim Lorenz and Scott Loughran and Kim Family Dentistry in Morrow. Morrow Lumber Company supplied building materials.

LMJH Receives State Recognition

Battelle for Kids has announced that Little Miami Junior High School will be receiving the 2009 SOAR Award for High Progress during the Ohio School Boards Association's Capital Conference.

This annual award acknowledges a school's high academic progress in multiple grade levels and subjects over the last school year (2008-2009).

Schools receiving this award "are pioneers in their efforts to improve teaching and learning practices by using and implementing value-added information," said Jim Mahoney, executive director of Battelle for Kids. "They are the proof that tremendous growth is occurring in schools across the state. It's no longer just about the students you have, but rather what educators do with these students that makes a difference."

Schools receiving this award are evaluated on six indicators of effectiveness in the most recent school year. Each grade and subject represents an indicator of effectiveness. Additional criteria include: above average growth in the most recent school year, consistency in school effects across grades and subjects and minimal negative school effects in the most recent year's analysis.

Battelle for Kids launched SOAR, Battelle for Kids' School Improvement Collaborative--a statewide pilot initiative that provides value-added analysis and professional development to school districts throughout Ohio.
