LMJH STAFF PRESENT BEST PRACTICES TO BOARD OF EDUCATION
Language Arts teachers at Little Miami Junior High School are using data to improve the instruction and learning of all their students. These teachers evaluated "Value-Added" data, a measure of growth or improvement from one school year to the next to determine the "value" gained by a student during that year. One change to this year's curriculum was introducing tiered-novels.
"Previously, students in a language arts class all read the same book. Now groups of students in the class are reading through different novels at the same time," explained 8th grade teacher Malinda Carter.
Teachers offer three to four novels to students, and then assign students the novels based on student interest, Ohio Achievement Test data and in-class observation. For example, 7th grade students in Katy Wall's class were reading The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney, The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, or Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie during the mystery unit.
Working in groups of 3-4, the student's complete packets specifically for the novel they are reading during that unit. Activities include answering questions on the previous night's reading, a vocabulary exercise and a group activity, like making a family crest relevant to the characters in the book, Ms. Wall explained.
Another change this year is the implementation of weekly reviews and 4-week common assessments. The short-cycle common assessments allow the teachers to identify areas where a student is struggling and offer additional support, as well as identify students who need enrichment opportunities.
"The questions for the weekly reviews are specifically selected from the most difficult and challenging questions from previous achievement tests," explained 8th grade teacher Keri Millburn.
"Our teachers in every content area are studying achievement data to find ways to improve the quality of instruction," said Principal Brian Bailey. "We will not be satisfied until 100 percent of our students are successful."

LMJH RECIEVES TOP HONORS
Congratulations to Little Miami Junior High School students and staff for achieving top honors on the Making Middle Grades Work assessment.
The Middle Grades Assessment, which was administered to 18,297 eighth-grade students from 309 schools in 19 states, is comprised of three subject tests (reading, mathematics and science) coupled with a student survey and a teacher survey. The results give schools, districts and states a unique opportunity to document school improvement efforts and determine what is and is not working to increase student achievement. Little Miami Junior High placed 6th in Science, 7th in Reading, and 10th in Math on this national test.
