Over the course of a school year, the Little Miami Local School District uses a number of assessment tools to help monitor the educational progress of our students.
Some of these assessments are state-mandated and others are specific to the district. All of them provide data that help teachers determine the appropriate instructional levels and skills that students are ready to learn. These assessments also aid teachers and principals in creating the best environment possible for students to achieve.

Students scores on these assessments are always available to parents for their review. Any questions should be directed to your student's teacher or principal, or to Curriculum Director Regina Morgan.
New state assessments
Ohio’s uses a variety of assessments in conjunction with the new state learning standards. The following information offers an information about the assessments.
Early Literacy/STAR Assessments
Little Miami uses these assessments as a method of benchmarking students' achievement in these subject areas. All STAR assessments are taken online, and are computer-adaptive tests. Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each child's test by choosing each test question based on the child's previous response. If the child answers a question correctly, the difficulty of the next item is increased. If a child misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. More information about STAR assessments can be found here.
Student scores on the STAR assessments are given a percentile rank. Percentile rank scores range from 1 to 99 and express student ability relative to the scores of other students in the same grade. For a particular student, this score indicates the percentage of students in the norms group who obtained lower scores. For example, a percentile rank of 29% indicates that this student's skills are greater than 29% of students nationally in the same grade.
|40% or greater||At/Above Benchmark|
|25% to 39%||On Watch|
|11% to 24%||Intervention|
|1% to 10%||Urgent Intervention|
Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System
Little Miami uses the Fountas & Pinnell benchmark assessment system in grades K-4 to aid in intervening and enriching our readers. This data, coupled with the STAR reading data, gives teachers and parents a fuller view of a student's reading ability.
