Spelling words are given in sentence form. Students will be asked to spell their words in sentences, dictated by the teacher. The words are cumulative. This means that the first week children will spell five words and learn words with the endings -at and -am (such as: ham, jam, cat, mat). The sentences will contain all five words and words with the -at and -am endings. Examples of sentences for theme 1, week 1 are:
The cat and ham go on the mat.
We see a hat and jam.
The following week, the children will be accountable for five new words AND the words from the first week.
